The news coverage, the obituaries, the comics, the tweets – none of those made me want to cry this morning. Visiting at apple.com did.
Though we all knew that he was sick, this loss must have left the entire company in shock. That man rocked entire industries. Now all we have to look forward to are the reverberations of his influence. Microsoft flew their flag at half mast.
Strangely, the most poignant memorial I’ve come across today is the NYTimes interactive visualization of patents that Jobs participated in. Browsing through this catalog of the innovations he touched gives a real sense of the many ways in which he impacted modern life.
A friend emailed out a link to the commencement speech that Jobs gave at Stanford in 2005. I’m sure many people are revisiting that video today.
In that speech, Jobs concluded with a quote from the back of the 1974 issue of the Whole Earth Catalog. Stay hungry, Stay foolish. I will. I promise.
